Interesting as the story may be, what makes it a lot more interesting is that it was based on a true story.

Kinky Boots is a Broadway hit that features a story based on Steve Pateman, owner and founder of Divine Boots, a line of kinky footwear made especially for men.

It was first adapted into a film, with same title, in 2005 and was featured at the Sundance Film Festival the following year. It is there that Tony award-winning producer Daryl Roth first fell in love with the film.

She knew it would turn out to be an awesome theatrical production so she acquired rights to translate it for the stage, partnering with another award-winning producer, Hal Luftig.

Soon, they hired American theater director Jerry Mitchell and award-winning theater actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein to join the team.

Jerry directed whereas Harvey wrote the book. Jerry, knowing that Cyndi Lauper is a good friend of Harvey's, asked him if he could ask Cyndi to write the songs for the musical (see Hamilton discount tickets here).

Cyndi, an award-winning singer and songwriter, agreed and started working with the team. In 2012, they finally announce that play dates will begin the next year.

Kinky Boots: The Story

The musical is divided into two acts.

The first act starts with a young Charlie Price, son of owner and CEO of "Price & Son", a local shoe factory. Charlie is not at all interested in the family business and only wishes to move to London with his fiancee Nicola. However, after his father died a sudden death, he is forced to deal with the business, which he found was on the verge of bankruptcy. No matter how much Charlie tried to maintain the business, but the market is just too competitive, so he decided to shut the factory down. On one occasion, he met a drag queen, Lola, who performed in one of the bars he went to. He noticed the difficulty Lola had wearing women's high heeled shoes. Charlie didn't know it yet but it was going to trigger something big for him and his father's company. Soon, he realized that maybe he could make women shoe designs for men. He invited Lola and his angels to help design the new product. It became a huge hit and, soon, the company was creating shoes for drag queens (Wicked ticket discounts here).

The second act is about how the company finally achieved success by creating shoes for a very niche market. Certain troubles happen here and there as they were preparing for a fashion show in Milan. One such incident is when Charlie refused to let Lola's drag queen friends model the shoes on the show. This upsets Lola and they all leave Charlie. Lauren, his assistant and soon to be love interest, has always been beside him and is now trying to patch things up between the two. The show in Milan but was no one to model drag boots and high heels. Charlie, in an effort to showcase his company's products, chose to learn how to walk in such kinky shoes and model it for the fashion industry. People immediately notice the niche shoe company and the line they presented. The company goes on to be successful as Charlie and Lola become good friends and business partners, whereas Lauren, becomes his partner in life.

The Woman Behind the Music

Kinky Boots is Cyndi Lauper's first attempt at creating music for stage. She found it to be challenge but, being the talented artist that she is, she was able to create remarkable music. So remarkable that she was nominated and awarded Best Score for one of the songs in the musical. It was a memorable event as she was the first ever woman to win alone in that particular category. The musical showcased Cyndi's musical range as it featured the cast singing songs in a variety of genres: tango, new wave, pop funk, and soulful ballads (Lion King tickets discounts here). Orchestrator Stephen Oremus assisted Cyndi in laying down the songs she comes up with and breaking them down into a four-voice arrangement for the cast to sing and perform. Some of the popular songs include "Everybody Say Yeah", "Not My Father's Son", "Sex is in the Heel", "What a Woman Wants", and more.

Awards and Recognition

Released at about the same year Matilda and Pippin, two very worthy competitors, Kinky Boots did not gain as much attention as the other two did. However, as the days progressed, more and more people were getting caught in the "heart and soul" of the Broadway musical about shoes. In 2013, it was nominated for two categories at the Drama League Awards, and winning the Distinguished Production category in the same event. It went on to receive more nominations at the Outer Critics Circle Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Artios Awards, Evening Standard Theatre Awards, and the ever-prestigious, Tony Awards. It was a good year for the Americans as Kinky Boots was able to compete and triumph over the British-produced Matilda the Musical. The show also gained positive reviews from theater critics, writers, and publications (also see super cheap Book of Mormon tickets here).

Musical-wise, the songs of Kinky Boots also garnered several awards and recognition, particularly its original cast album released on the same year. It premiered at the top spot in the Billboard Cast Album Charts. The recorded album also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
