Early years

Born in 1988 in the Tottenham community of North London, UK, Adele is a world-famous singer and songwriter. She was raised by her single mother, Penny Adkins, after her Welsh father left them when she was 4. At 4 years of age, Adele started singing and has said that she was heavily influenced by the Spice Girls and also loved the works of Destiny's Child, Mary J Blige and Lauryn Hill. She later came to admire the likes of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald at teenage. It was while attending a concert at 14 that she saw an artist known as 'Pink' and decided to become a singer. Music wasn't a big part of Adele's family. Nevertheless, she began "impersonating" Gabrelle and The Spice Girls. She used to perform for her friends and mother in her room. She only came to realize that music was her calling when a friend of her father, who was a producer, heard her wonderful voice and asked her perform a cover of the hit song "Heart of Glass".

As a result, Adele upped sticks and enrolled at BRIT School in Croydon to learn music. It was there that she wrote and composed several songs, and posted them on her page on MySpace. She graduated in May 2006 and joined other popular alumni include Amy Winehouse, the Feeling and Kate Nash. Shortly after, she started being noticed by record companies. She recorded a demo of three songs for her class project and caught the eye of XL Records. She was contacted and then signed a contract with them in September 2006. He manager was Jonathan Dickens. She lent her vocals to "My Yvonne", a song by Jamie Penate, and later met another produced named Jim Abiss, whom she's worked with throughout her time at XL.

Career

Adele began recording at the age of 19 and in 2008, she released her debut album titled '19'-the age when started recording it. The album featured a couple of popular lead singles "Chasing Pavements" and "Hometown Glory" which catapulted her to overnight success and fame. In March 2008, Adele made her foray into America by signing a contract with Columbia Records with blessings from XL Records. Later in 2008, she began a world tour which lasted until the middle of the following year.

Adele released her much-anticipated second studio album in January 2011. The album was titled "21", again the age when started recording it. The album became a success and fans in the UK and worldwide appreciated it for its classic jazz and American R&B style. She has stated that "21" was inspired by the break-up with her former partner. It took a different direction from "19" as it incorporated some attributes of country music. Featuring smash hits like "Someone Like You'' and "Rollin in the Deep", the album was a massive success. Another single in the album "Set Fire to Rain" became her third number 1 single on Billboard's hottest 100 songs. Subsequently, Adele become the first ever musician to have the number 1 album on Billboard's Hot 200 at the same time with three number 1 singles.

In 2012, Adele composed and recorded a song titled "Skyfall", a theme song for the James Bond movie with the same name. Upon its release, "Skyfall" topped the charts and rose to the second position on UK Singles Chart. It also ended at number 8 on Billboard's Hottest 100 tracks, selling more than 2 million copies in America within the first three days. She eventually won an Oscar for the track. At the time, she was pregnant and therefore unable to promote the track.

In November 2015, Adele released her third album titled "25". She posted the album's cover on Instagram, saying that her new album would be called a "make-up" record as her last one was a "break-up". She said the album was about making up for all she never did or ever did, as well as for lost time.

Just a day later, Adele released "Hello", an epic ballad that again highlighted her soaring prowess in the pop music industry. The song was accompanied by a visual clip, featuring her romantic interest, played by actor Tristan Wilds, and was directed by Xavier Dolan, an up-and-coming filmmaker. The clip is said to be the first to be made with IMAX cameras. "Hello" went straight to the top of Billboard's top chart, making it Adele's fourth chart-topping hit. It also became the first ever single to be downloaded more than 1 million times within a week. The song remained top of the charts in the UK for multiple weeks as well.

Among other achievements, the album is also the quickest to sell 1 million copies in the UK, achieving that in 10 days. 25 has now become the best-selling album of Adele, shifting more than 19 million copies globally. In May 2016, Adele left her original recording company XL and signed with Sony, in a deal reported to be worth £90 million-the biggest ever record deal.
